Disney Channel’s 76th original movie, Disney’s “Princess Protection Program,” starring Selena Gomez (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) and Demi Lovato (“Sonny With A Chance”), premiered as TV’s No. 1 entertainment telecast of 2009 in Kids 6-11 (3.1 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.2 million) and cable’s No. 1 scripted telecast in Total Viewers (8.5 million). Additionally, the movie was Friday’s No. 1 telecast across all TV in the same key demos.
“Princess Protection Program” towered over all time period competition on both broadcast and cable, virtually doubling runner up CBS in Total Viewers (8.5 million vs. 4.4 million), and also scoring No. 1 rank in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14.
“Princess Protection Program” debuted as Disney Channel’s No. 3 original movie of all time in Total Viewers (8.5 million), behind June ‘08’s “Camp Rock” and August 07’s “High School Musical 2.”
“Princess Protection Program” generated Disney Channel’s highest numbers in the time period in Total Viewers, Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14 in more than a 1 year – since 6/20/08 (“Camp Rock”).
Since its premiere in EMEA in May ’09, and now the U.S., Disney’s “Princess Protection Program” has reached 19.3 million unique Total Viewers around the world, including 3.7 million Kids 6-11 and 3.5 million Tweens 9-14 for last night’s premiere.
Friday’s original “Wizards of Waverly Place” stood as the series’ most-watched telecast on record in Total Viewers (6.0 million), Kids 6-11 (2.5 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.5 million). [TV By The Numbers]Charley Varrick
